Diagnostics and procedures

DNA relationship testing (paternity and maternity).

DNA tests that show whether a man is a child's biological father (paternity) or a woman is the child's biological mother (maternity), handled privately and with care.

What it involves.

  • Paternity testing: whether a man is the child's biological father
  • Maternity testing: whether a woman is the child's biological mother
  • A painless cheek (mouth) swab: no needles, suitable for newborns, children and adults
  • Samples taken at the clinic by trained staff, with each person's identity checked
  • Every adult tested gives consent; for a child, a parent or legal guardian consents
  • Results given to you privately and kept confidential
  • Need the result for court, immigration or another official purpose? Tell us when you book so we can advise on the right type of test

Preparing for it.

  • Book ahead and tell us who is being tested
  • Each adult brings a valid photo ID (national ID card, passport, driver's licence or voter's card); bring the child's birth certificate if you have one
  • A child under 18 comes with a parent or legal guardian who can give consent
  • Don't eat, drink, smoke or chew gum for 30 minutes before the swab
  • Ask about the price and when to expect the result when you book

These are general guides. Always follow the specific instructions your care team gives you when you book.
