Internal medicine is a specialty focusing on care of adults using evidence-based medicine. Also called internists, they are primary care physicians that focus on acute or chronic illnesses. They are equipped to take care of a spectrum of diseases. They are not limited to one organ system or medical problem.
Internists follow patients throughout their adult life and establish a long healthy relationship with them. Internists are the first to see patients; diagnose and treat, promote health and prevent diseases, and if needed, will refer to other specialties for advanced cases. They are trained to solve diagnostic problems and can handle severe chronic illnesses and situations where several different illnesses may strike at the same time.
